The Baroness needs CPR.

Chapter Seven

Jackson crumpled the paper in a ball and tossed it across the room. Owen knelt down by the life-sized doll, careful not to put his knee in blood droplets. In the next moment, Jackson slid down next to him, close. Owen had to fight a shiver.

“So CPR? Do you know how?” he asked.

Owen shrugged. Jackson had somehow become creepy to him now, despite there being no hard evidence he was involved in this scheme.

Everyone deserves one chance, was Justice Dupree’s famous last line. It should apply to this man too. A man who had been very good to Owen.

Maybe.

Jackson leaned over as though to do mouth to mouth and Owen clouted him. “Be serious for fuck sake,” he warned.

“You’re doing well enough for the both of us.”

Owen sighed. He pushed back a slender fold of sequined fabric and brought down the gown’s zipper.

“This doesn’t feel right,” muttered Jackson.

Owen snorted, “No shit.”

“No, I mean, how does the person at your mother’s know that we’ve even found the Baroness?”

That question would have to wait. There on the pale wooden stomach stretched a dashed line, just under the navel. A juvenile picture of a dagger had also been drawn just above the line. Jackson gasped. He discovered something just on the other side of the doll. The sound of strong tape pulling free gave Owen a start. Jackson lifted a hunting knife to his eye level. Unconsciously, from the handle, he ripped off a small remainder of the gray duct tape.

In black paint, a message had been inscribed on both sides of the knife’s blade. Jackson discovered it too. He read one side, slowly, and then carefully turned the blade around.
